Still, the question remains: Can Trump consistently stay awake through the long slog of a criminal trial? Still, it was a striking image that simulcast three individuals in one: a criminal defendant; one of the most powerful people on the planet; and a napping old man. Not everyone is so lucky when those around them fall asleep in court. A defendant whose liberty is on the line would be well advised to find out a way to stay awake. (Some judges might frown upon a defendant chewing gum in court, but sleep specialists have identified plenty of other ways to stay awake, some of them courthouse-friendly.)

Lessons From a 20-Person Polycule

Relationships With More Than One PersonKatie I started by dating somebody on an ENM app who was in a different polycule who was connected to someone in this polycule. He’s married, and his wife and I are metamours, which is simply a word for my partner’s partner. Resources always help, books like “The Ethical Slut” and “Polysecure.” But undoing the monogamous script, the socialization, is really, really difficult. One of their husbands is one of my best friends and occasional sexual partner, and I do have sex with my wives, but we’re not romantically involved. It’s, I’m doing these things, I’m going to be gone for these two weeks, what do you need from me?

I was at my mom’s house in the suburbs when I watched Barry Keoghan make love to his bestie’s grave in Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn.”“Promising Young Woman,” Fennell’s previous film, a rape-revenge thriller for the girlboss generation, was a toothless bid at provocation. “Saltburn” seemed to promise a similar blend of all style, no substance, but the online hype had piqued my curiosity. So, there I was, watching Keoghan as an Oxford student named Oliver become one with the soil, my mother snoozing beside me. The moment brought back memories from adolescence of the dozens of times she’d walk into my teenage bedroom — or the same living room where I was watching “Saltburn” — to find me slack-jawed in the middle of “Basic Instinct” or “A Clockwork Orange.” Naturally, she always seemed to waltz in during the most morally compromised or sexually bewildering scenes.

I'm a new mom who became incredibly superstitious after giving birth. When friends or family members asked us about her sleep, I'd change the subject. I told him I was going through a challenging time and didn't want to have sleep conversations with anyone. She told me that being superstitious could be a part of postpartum OCD. "I recommend reading and writing down some facts about baby sleep," she said.

Snoozers have the same sleep quality when they wake up immediately vs. when they snooze, a new study found. In fact, when people were allowed to snooze for 30 minutes, they were actually more alert. This contradicts what people previously thought about snoozing, that it hurts sleep quality. Next, the scientists closely monitored 31 regular snoozers in the lab to see what effects snoozing had on their sleep quality. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe test results found no serious physical differences in sleep quality between the two scenarios.

As a result, books like “Call Me Max” have been challenged or outright removed from schools and libraries in Florida, as well as other states — and though some believe book bans lead to more book sales, authors say the effect of those bans is devastating for their careers. These bans “overwhelmingly” target books about race and racism, as well as books with LGBTQ characters, PEN America said in its September study on school book bans. The MoveOn Banned Book Mobile stops for an event with local authors and teachers on October 1, 2023 in Decatur, Georgia. “(A book ban) would make news, and people would say, ‘I’ll buy this book just to show them,’” Lukoff said of the once-common result of book bans. Lukoff said his first high-profile bans occurred in early 2021, in Austin and Salt Lake City, when book bans first started to accelerate.

Apple held its fall event featuring the new iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9 on Tuesday. Apple Watch Series 9 will have the ability to be operated one-handed, without touching the device. Users will be able to answer calls and more by double-tapping their fingers. The function allows someone wearing the new watch to answer phone calls, snooze alarms, and take pictures through their iPhone with a simple one-handed gesture. As a result, Series 9 owners will be able to control their watch without touching the display.

During his snooze, the study team will analyze Woofus’ brain waves to judge the quality of his sleep. John Joyner/NC State Veterinary MedicineTraining the dogs to accept EEGTo find out whether sleep problems in dogs indicate early signs of dementia as they do in people, Olby and her team turned to a group of senior dogs enrolled in an ongoing study testing antiaging supplements. John Joyner/NC State Veterinary MedicineFor the new study measuring a dog’s brain waves during sleep, researchers used a form of electroencephalogram called polysomnography, used in sleep clinics to diagnose sleep problems in people. Jake, a 13-year-old pointer, was one of 28 dogs trained to sleep with EEG electrodes. When sleeping brain waves were compared with a dog’s cognitive testing, researchers found that dogs with greater dementia spent less time in deep and REM sleep, just as people do.
The researchers refer to this as a “sleep spiral.”The research marked the first time scientists recorded brain activity in free-ranging wild marine mammals, capturing data from 104 sleep dives. Then she attached them to 13 juvenile female elephant seals that are part of a colony at Año Nuevo State Park in Pescadero, California. In shallow waters, the elephant seals even reached the seafloor, where they would rest. During REM sleep, elephant seals enter a "sleep spiral." Elephant seals sleep the most along the coast and near their foraging grounds, and that data could be used to see how shipping traffic could affect the seals.
"But senior dogs are so lovely, and it's well worth the cost to go the extra mile for them." Whatever furry friend happens to be snoozing on your couch, caring for senior dogs can get pricey. ASK FOR HELPIf your senior dog needs a medical treatment you just cannot afford, do not give up hope. The same principles apply to your furry companion, which is why one solution is a "savings account specifically set aside for your pet's medical care," said Dr. Melvin. "I can't wait for my next senior dog, because they are so precious," she said.
The most vivid dreams typically occur during rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep. A typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 to 110 minutes and transitions between two primary stages: non-rapid eye movement and rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep. Why your dreams are so vivid and sometimes disturbingYou're more likely to remember dreams closer to waking up. Therefore, we're more likely to remember dreams closer to waking up compared to right after falling asleep. Moreover, "we are more likely to remember dreams if … they are upsetting or if we consciously try to remember them," Mundt added.
Talking points from European soccer

Jan 29 (Reuters) - Talking points from the weekend in European soccer leagues:PIOLI UNDER PRESSURE AS MILAN SET UNWANTED RECORDSIt has been a rough start to 2023 for Stefano Pioli and AC Milan, with only one win in seven games. Pioli’s side have let in four goals in consecutive league games for the first time in the club’s history and on Sunday conceded five goals at home for the first time since 1997. BARCELONA SURVIVE THREE-GAME STRETCH WITHOUT LEWANDOWSKIBarcelona are in form on top of the LaLiga standings and extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games, even without key striker Robert Lewandowski. Despite struggling up front without Lewandowski, who is still LaLiga's top scorer on 13 goals, Xavi Hernandez's side managed to keep their momentum and even extended their lead over bitter rivals Real Madrid to five points. Fuellkrug, who at 29 was a surprise addition to Germany's World Cup squad back in November, is currently top of the scorers list with 13 goals.
The S & P 500 hovers at the downtrend line everyone's watching after back-to-back 1%+ gains. The S & P 500 popping above the famous trend line would be a positive but in itself not a game changer. S & P 500 as a whole at 17x next 12 months' consensus — not cheap. Slicing away the five largest S & P 500 names or using the equal-weight S & P renders the P/E nearer to 15x. Worth recalling the S & P had a 25%+ drawdown last year when earnings were still hitting record highs in aggregate, so softness in Q4 not entirely a shock to the tape.
This is the daily notebook of Mike Santoli, CNBC's senior markets commentator, with ideas about trends, stocks and market statistics. Valuations are less demanding than several months ago, which is probably fair for the average stock but fuller at the index level thanks to still-rich megacaps. Treasurys rising again at the longer end, sinking the yield curve further, while the dollar rebounds a bit — both risk-averse actions. The current economic activity levels are not observably recessionary, but the yield curve and its historical record of preceding recessions is in investors' head. During a morning of dense financial testimony, three jurors and one alternate closed their eyes. The apparent sleepiness hit as a state tax investigator described auditing CFO Allen Weisselberg. Jurors in the Trump Organization's ongoing criminal tax-fraud trial struggled to stay awake during dense financial testimony on Monday morning. Their eyes closed and their heads nodded forward — or, in one female juror's case, tilted backward — at points in the testimony. Prosecutors had called their final witness, a state tax investigator, to the stand to describe how he audited the company's former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg.
The host, Ryan Villines, is organizing a boycott, encouraging hosts to "snooze" their listings. Like Johnson, many Airbnb hosts and property managers are frustrated by what they describe as the vacation-rental platform's tendency to favor guests in disputes. Liz DeBold Fusco, an Airbnb spokesperson, said the new policy was meant to provide "greater flexibility" to hosts and guests. After outrage from hosts, Airbnb walked back the reimbursement component, but hosts said it's too little, too late. Airbnb host Ryan Villines is "snoozing" his listings in Missouri and Montana as a protest.
